Although I’m putting this out into the world on April Fools’ Day, this post is no joke. In fact, I find the spoof content posted online on April 1st to be annoying rather than funny. So, to spare you from encountering something like “City Council realizes Toronto is way too uptight and will abolish all by-laws because most of them aren’t enforced anyhow,” here is a real update on Bloordale Beach Park.

To name the new park on Croatia St. “Bloordale Beach Park,” I had to send a Property Naming Application to the city. They said I should submit the thing sooner rather than later, since it would require extra consultation. In my opinion, a better idea for city staff would be to accept this great idea for a park name and go work on other stuff instead. But that’s not how things work at the city. Clearly, make-work projects are pretty central to how things are run in Toronto.
I sent the application in a couple of weeks ago. At the time, the petition had accumulated 1042 signatures (1006 online signatures and 36 on paper) and had 37 comments. Plus, I’d received 7 letters of support — 4 from community members and 3 from business owners. I sent all of these things to the city, along with the official Property Naming form.
The petition is still online, accumulating signatures (with 1016 people having signed it so far), as nothing has been decided by the city as yet. They’ve told me the park’s name will be chosen by the end of the year. If you showed support for this, thank you! If you’re only finding out about this now about would like to let the city know that you think it’s a good idea, you can still sign the petition, but also, feel free to email Alejandra Bravo. I’m sure her office would love to hear from more people who are in support of this wonderful idea.
Meanwhile, I’ve been working on a couple of other beach-related projects. I’ll share further details in due time.
Yours truly,
Shari K.
Brilliant!! Fingers crossed!!
